General Responsibilities

Corporate Counsel – Labor & Employment

This position does not require relocation to Florida

The Corporate Counsel position will be a member of the Hertz Law Department and its Labor & Employment practice group, reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, Labor & Employment. This position requires 25% to 50% travel. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Being a trusted advisor who provides prompt, accurate and ongoing counsel to internal clients on a wide range of labor and employment matters, including union, grievances and arbitrations, contract negotiations, employment litigation, and administrative and regulatory matters

  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with corporate and local operating management, HR staff and union leaders

  • Representing the Company in unfair labor practice, labor arbitration, and administrative agency proceedings, including witness preparation, case presentation, and the preparation of post-hearing briefs and other written products

  • Direct, hands-on management of sophisticated employment litigation matters arising under Federal, State and local laws

  • Ability to negotiate labor contracts throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, if required

  • Drafting and reviewing corporate policies to ensure legal compliance

Mandatory Requirements

The successful applicant must possess:

  • J.D. degree from an accredited university

  • Membership in good standing in the Bar of at least one U.S. state and able to become certified as Authorized House Counsel in Florida on application

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a practicing labor and employment attorney with a corporate in-house legal department, private law firm, and/or government agency

  • Prior work experience under the National Labor Relations Act, in arbitration and litigation, and in union representation disputes

  • Some experience as a labor contract negotiator in contract costing procedures,drafting collective bargaining agreement provisions,and negotiations principles

  • Experience providing practical, timely, and strategic counsel on employment matters

  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills, including an ability to lead through collaboration

  • A strong work ethic and a proven ability to meet deadlines on multiple projects simultaneously

  • Ability to operate in fast-paced environment with a very high level of autonomy

  • Ability to read, write, and fluently speak and understand the English language. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

  • Excellent PC skills, including proficiency in Excel

Preferred Requirements

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be strategic and analytical

  • Be a traditional labor lawyer first, but also have employment law experience

  • Give solid, practical advice that can be understood and used in a fast-paced business environment

  • Assume significant responsibility and solve problems without prompting

  • Have superior written and verbal communication skills, as evidence by writing samples
