General Responsibilities

The Sustainability and Reporting Manager is responsible for enhancing, managing, and administering Hertz’s Environmental Sustainability program on a global scale, as well as leading on the company’s core Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)/Environmental Social Governance (ESG) reporting. This role is the primary point of contact for both senior management and operations on all environmental sustainability related matters. This role will also be responsible for leading the reporting and disclosure process for Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Ecovadis, Corporate Equality Index (CEI) and the annual Corporate Responsibility report. This position reports to the Global Director of Corporate Responsibility and is a member of the Global Corporate Affairs function.

In this role, you will work to improve and drive the programs and processes related to environmental sustainability and manage the overall corporate responsibility disclosures across the Hertz business. This role will partner with Sales, Procurement, Operations, Facilities and Communications teams on the development and executive of environmental sustainability goals and processes, and coordinate best practice sharing. Externally, the Manager will represent the company at key association events and sustainability fora.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities are to:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate programs, processes, systems and procedures relating to Hertz’s Sustainability Initiatives and consistent with Hertz’s corporate wide goals and strategies

  • Develop strategies and establish 3 – 5-year targets and annual reduction goals in for the enterprise’s energy, water and waste streams

  • Measure program progress to report key metrics in an actionable format to key business partners

  • Act as a trusted advisor assisting Hertz business units in thoughtfully reviewing operations against Hertz’s responsible business standards and stakeholder expectations.

  • Professionally communicate and present to key decision makers and senior leaders of the business

  • Plan and schedule project timelines and milestones using appropriate tools

  • Proactively manage changes in project scope, identify issues, and devise contingency plans with your stakeholders

  • Keep abreast with industry wide social responsibility issues and best practices, and constantly enhance and/or build most appropriate proactive initiatives to affect positive change

  • Develop tailored environmental sustainability communication "packages" for all key stakeholder groups (corporate and individual customers, franchisees, employees and shareholders).

  • Develop a program that engages Hertz’s field operations in sustainable practices

  • Partner with Sales and Investor Relations to respond to enterprise RFPs, inquiries from socially responsible investors and relevant ratings organizations (e.g. CDP), highlighting Hertz’s focus on responsible business practices and generating growth through shared value solutions

Key-result areas

  • Contribute to the development and launch of reduction targets for carbon, energy, water and waste, globally in 2020

  • Drive reporting and action plans in collaboration with key business partners to achieve reduction targets and to realize cost savings

  • Manage ESG reporting to keep in line with evolving global standards to establish Hertz as an industry leader

  • Drive employee engagement of employees through relevant training, incentives, storytelling and other best practice and creative methods.

  • Develop a forward-looking five-year environmental sustainability plan

  • Identify and promote in concert with Communications the company’s sustainability initiatives to its employees and customers to increase sales and corporate responsibility

  • Partner with Procurement to drive sustainable sourcing strategy by providing support through development and implementation of Responsible Procurement strategy

  • Embed additional environmental sustainability and social responsibility criteria into Responsible Procurement with suppliers

  • Keep abreast of emerging issues related to environmental sustainability, helping the company synthesize these issues and respond to them when warranted

Mandatory Requirements

Educational Background:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Environmental Science, Sustainability or related field is required; Master’s in related field is preferred

  • Certification in Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and/or SASB preferred

Professional Experience: Minimum 6 plus years’ experience in implementing and managing environmental sustainability/energy programs as well as social corporate responsibility (CSR)/ESG reporting. Experience at a large global organization(s) is highly desirable. Proven ability to contribute to the development of programs from concept through integration is important.


  • Experience in international corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmental sustainability programs.

  • Knowledge of the Travel and Tourism industry and drivers of corporate social responsibility for the rental car industry

  • Familiarity with sustainability reporting metrics and schemes including carbon accounting, Carbon Disclosure Project (CD) and GRI

  • Exceptional project management, collaboration, and oral and written communication skills; proven track record of preparing materials and presenting analyses to senior management.

  • Familiarity with sustainability and energy, water and waste issues effecting the travel industry


  • Excellent project leadership ability, with a strong project management background

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate strategy and implement into simple, tactical, results-drive goals

  • Excellent oral and written skills

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and flexibility in a fast-paced environment

  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint programs

  • Software experience characteristic of energy or sustainability monitoring systems as well as Microsoft Office Software, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access
